Haynes has the specific number of turns to back off the adjusting nuts on the transmission bands, if you go too much or too little then you can toast the transmission.
The best gasket is the plastic with rubber lines on each side style from the dealership, they are re-usable for 4 or 5 pan drops.
Cork does seal up but it is a pain to remove, there's no mess with the dealership gasket.
Also, there have been a few people (myself included) that can't get a regular rubber gasket to seal right on our transmissions.

Well, tried to sit down and replace my pads and rotors but little did I know, the calipers are held on by giant allen key bolts. So now I gotta run to the store and buy bigger allen keys but I almost don't feel like it today because I'm tired as hell and sore as hell to boot...decisions decisions decisions...

Trans service
I was thinking about doing the same to mine. I have not done any tranny service and I have put 50,000 miles on it. I think the last service prior was 5 or 6 K before me so its been about 55,000 miles with no service. I have fluid, replacement filer and a gasket but its cork. What do you recommend?
Also, how hard is a band adjustment? I would consider myself mechanically inclined, but mostly engines, transmissions are not something I am 100% familiar with.
Thanks

The band adjustment is pretty simple but you will need an 8 point 5/16" socket (craftsman has them). Loosen the lock nut (15mm or 19mm) and then torque the stud to 6 ft/lbs or 72 in/lbs then back off 2 turns (Factory manual says 2 7/8 turns but ATSG manual says 2 turns. 2 Turns gives you a little quicker shift with less slippage. Then tighten lock nut to 35 ft/lbs and your done.
I have used both cork and rubber and haven't had much trouble with either as long as you torque the pan bolts to 13 ft/lbs. That keeps the pan even and won't strip the threads.

Put on a new belt and tensioner pulley (I think it was fine though, think it was just a bad belt, so I'll save it for an extra).
Also took off my running boards, fortunately the rockers are almost perfect - I was thinking they'd be bad.
Also took off the air filter and looked through the butterflies, only to notice that its SPOTLESS under there..I already ordered everything to do the plenum..Oops! Guess I shouldn't have assumed and I should've checked before ordering the stuff..Guess I gotta try to return it all now.
