@ jkeaton: Life would totally suck if we all agreed on everything!
@bbartow: True story, friend on mine was driving his Duster home one eveing, he's done a fair amount of engine work, he came across a slightly snow covered hill, couldn't get up, rear tires just spun.
Dug through the car to find something to help with traction, all he could find was speaker wire, had enough to make some "chains" and was able to get up the hill, wires didn't last much longer than that but they did the job.

I just thought I would let you know that your story may have saved me callin a tow truck. I was playing around in the snow and was tryin to get back into the road through a big berm, and promptly got stuck. After digging for like 20 minutes, I put blankets under the two rear tires and one of the front for traction. Worked like a charm.
Im about to get my income check and I cant figure out weather to go to 37 tires or just get new 33's? I would have to regear which there charging $500 to install with parts brought in already. Im guess that's a pretty good deal? The diff fluid need changing anyways...
When I was a kid in northwest Wisconsin and had my paper route I laced the rear tire on my bike with ½ inch rope to try and get more traction. It was normal for our area to get 60” sometimes more snow in a winter back then.
It was a pretty intricate weave and did work to help me go in the snow. The real problem was steering the damn thing. I tried lots of stuff including a ski out front but it just did not work out for me.
I ended up just walking most of the time.

Get some tons! Or if your not into that get the big tires, but be ready to break stuff!
