Remington 597 - $130.
Bushnell 3-9x40 scope - $60.
Remington 30 round magazine - $25.
Bi-pod that mounts to the front sling mount - $40.
Plinker made out of scrap metal - free.
After that initial investment:
500 round brick of bullets - $25
You can't beat a .22LR for target shooting because they're accurate and the ammo is cheap.

I much prefer an AR with a .22 conversion.
Sometimes one trigger pull fires two rounds. It order for me to go shooting, I would have to spend about $20 just in gas. That and my dad wouldn't let me take any of his guns even though I'm old enough...
The drive out to where I can shoot.
Not a fan of the 597, my mom has one and I don't like it.

I've looked at the MP15-22. Didn't like it. Hell, I don't like most .22 AR knock-offs.
I WOULD buy a rifle, BUT, I have to pay for stuff on my truck and I'm behind on insurance, so, it's a no go.
Besides, that's what I have my dad for.
As far as the shooting, most happen in Blue states and in gun-free zones. VIVA LA GUN CONTROL!

He killed his father earlier before this incident, the body was found in his home.
And most of the killing in the school took place in his mother's class room. He was buzzed into the school because the office staff recognized him as her son.
Hate to sound heartless, but this sounds like a mentally deranged individual committing a bad case of family violence gone wrong(er).
