14 gauge should be fine if you have it.

I'd likely end up hardwiring them to a switch. Just need to figure out where to put the switch...

your going to put them on a switch? i just hooked mine up to the backup light switch in the trans. mine come one when you put the trans in reverse.

Yeah, just a switch. I don't like hacking up stock wiring for anything. I'm having to deal with too much of that on the 76 already, so I don't want it on my daily. lol

Besides, it will let me turn them on manually.

on my truck i don't consider cutting a wire a couple inches from the light socket hacking. i look at is as a upgrade. every external light socket on my 81 has most likely been replaced already. i use 1157 bulbs as backup lights instead of the stock 1156 bulbs.

14 gauge is good for 10 amps.

I am only going to be running 55w bulbs, for a few seconds at a time.
