My 5.9 can smoke the hell out of the tires with over drive on or off, brake stand and all.. and it has no upgrades at all...

there is really no promise it wont break. I welded up a C8.25 and it shattered within two months. Good cheap mod but could have some nasty results.

I actually find this thread, especially the title, a bit funny. I mean I like my 5.9, and use the hell out of it (work truck), but compared to newer trucks I think our rams are pretty underpowered. Look at a new ram, 5.7-liter, makes 390hp and 407 ft-lbs. I would love to have that power.

Yes that is true, they make some nice numbers on the new trucks. But at the same time, my favorite thing about the 318 and 360 is that they were truly the last mopar muscle engines put in ram trucks. Our trucks modded, with a nice exhaust really sound like older muscle car era stuff. You can't make that kinda sound outta the 4.7 v8 or new hemi...not trying to put 'em or nothing, I think they can sound good with the right exhaust setup, but nothing sounds quite like our magnums, they were the last motors of that era. My dad mistaked the sound of my 97 360 for a vette one day that I was hauling butt thru the neighborhood home. Thought it was pretty funny

I hear what you are saying, but the original post was about someone almost in shock about how much power these engines put out, when by todays standards, these engines are pretty weak. I mean you can get more power out of a modern v-6 than our trucks.

I disagree, I believe our engines come out of the factory with good power. Certainly, 10 yrs down the road all these GM and mopar engines are making 350+ HP easy. You also must factor in the torque. The 94-97 360 mag had 345 ft lbs, which is still good by todays standards. Hell it only takes a few simple mods to get around 450. Hell, mine is making about 430-440 ft lbs of torque. And thats with minimum modification. The magnums are solid reliable blocks that have great power potential and were the last great sounding muscle engines that came outta Dodge for our trucks.

ok, I guess my point is being missed here. I am not down-talking the magnums. I am merely pointing out the obvious inexperience of the original poster.

Just to throw back to the OP's comment, yes, they are very stout for the comparable year trucks that were out. I love the sound and body design more than the other badges, especially the power compared to them. The biggest difference in why some of us can burn the tires off or not is mostly from the gearing. My friends truck has 4.10's in it and his will absolutely roast the tires off, but mine has 3.55's with LSD and it struggles to break loose. Most of the difference comes from that fact and I am planning on putting 4.10's in mine in the near future as it is a little easier on it when it comes to pulling a load or a trailer as I occasionally do. Definitely love these trucks!!! (Just not the crappy dashes!!)
