Default 98 2500 Ram 2WD VSS help

I am new, so forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong area. I have a 1998 Ram 2500 QuadCab, 2WD, 5.9L V8, Auto tranny. While driving to Maine from Maryland, the VSS died. Along the way a gas station shot the codes and I got PO500. All indicators are it is the VSS. So, I crawled under the truck located the VSS on the transmission/transfer case extension housing per the Haynes book. I replaced it with one I bought at AutoZone. They look identical. I still do not have an operable speedometer or odometer. Is there ANOTHER VSS on the rear diff on a 2WD 2500? For the life of me, I cannot locate a sensor that looks like the "other " sensor (part) AutoZone says is also a VSS. The one I replaced looked like a plastic spark plug.

Any help would be appreciated. I have 130,000+ miles, it runs great but I kind of need a speedometer and odometer with my 17 year old starting to drive...

I believe there should be a sensor on top of the rear pumpkin.... My 98 1500 has it, but I don't know for sure if the 2500's do or not as they are a different axle than the 1500's.... Is there any sensor at all on your rear? Might be callled an ABS sensor too.

Hang tight, someone will know more.... welcome to df

I didn't think the 98 and newer had the VSS on the trans output at all..... So much for that thought.

Yeah, rear axle is ABS sensor, and is prolly the one you want to replace.

Thanks. How easy/difficult will this be? I do not have access to a lift of any sort.

you don't need a lift, just crawl under and you'll see the sensor on top of the pumpkin. I haven't changed one myself yet, but I don't think there is much to it
