Default a word of caution on spectre air filters

Well, I recently did the plenum fix on my truck. Pulled the airbox off to look down the tb and see if I could see any oil after driving it a few hundred miles. To my surprise, there was an aluminum piece laying on top of the butterfly valve of the throttle body. I had no idea what it could be, and that kinda sick feeling started to set in. I picked up the aluminum piece, to see if I could figure out where in the heck it came from, and when I turned it over it said "spectre" on it. It was the aluminum logo thing that is pressed (or at least I thought it was pressed) onto one of the pleats of the filter. I guess when I was throttling the truck pretty hard trying to see if it would ping, I sucked the logo off the filter and it came to rest on the tb. I had a nearly new paper filter, so I stuck it on instead. If you've got a spectre drop-in filter, you might want to pull that little aluminum logo off the filter. I'd hate to think where that little bugger could wind up if it got through the throttle body. Freaked me right out, man!

Mine came loose and was mounted on top. Did you have the air filter installed upside down?

No, was mounted right. Would be darn near impossible to put it in there upside down.

Hey, I like your thinking. The mental anguish alone should justify a new motor and trans, right. That truck has been like a son to me. A red headed step son sometimes, but a son nonetheless.

Now I gotta check the filter in the wife's Yukon.

I have a KN in my 2001 leftover from my 1996. So my truck would not have to worry about that.

Too bad about that. The spectre filter looks much better than the KN. the KN looks like it would let in a lot of dirt. You really have to keep them oiled.

But for 25 bucks, it is a great investment. KN robs you (45 bucks) for its name.
