Warranty paid off this time!
I purchased my 2008 Quad Cab Big Horn 4x2 at the end of January this year. I was hesitant about purchasing the dealer warranty, but it only added 2 or 3 dollars to the payment, so I went for it. I took it in two weeks ago for a free oil change and to have the 545RFE transmission updated and flashed back to factory default. The technician stated that he heard a lot of gear noise from the rear end and suspected the pinion was going bad. I took it to them this past Monday. They put me in a rental car for free and set to work on the diff. The technician said there were metal pieces throughout the diff! The carrier bearings were totally shot! The disassembled the diff, degreased and air blew it all out and installed new bearings and seals. I supplied them with Amsoil Severe Gear 75w140 and they supplied the slip additive. The service manager said the job would have cost me around $950! I happily paid the $100 deductable.

Gave $1200 for mine when I bought the truck. Well worth it. Already had a front hub assembly and tie rod end replaced. About $600 dealer cost. $3100 is just crazy unless it is a lifetime warranty. I just bought one for my 07 Grand Caravan direct from Dodge with a $100 deductible for $1300.
My rear diff had broken clips and metal all in the oil. I was within my warranty and took it in and paid my $100 deductible and was told the Chrysler rep denied the warranty rebuild. They flushed it and slapped new oil in it and gave it back to me. I raised hell and asked to speak to the rep which i was also denied. I ended up firing a letter off the corporate and a week later i found a deal on a new Auburn LSD, Motive 456s and Master kit so I let it slide and replaced everything my way.
I hate my local stealership but glad it worked out for you.

I had to get warranty work done on mine the day I got it.
On the drive home from the dealership I had the O/D off light come on and pushing the button didn't turn it back on.
The manual told me that when the transmission overheats it will kick off the overdrive.
So I took it back to the dealership to get it fixed.
I had to pay the $50 deductible and that sucked but at least my truck was getting fixed.
The dealer was walking with me to the rental counter to get me a truck to drive while mine was down and while we were walking he asked how old I was.
I told him I was 19 and he stopped and we went back to his office.
He told me that you have to be 21 to rent a car so he grabbed his dealer plate and we went out to the parking lot and he slapped it on a 2004 Ram, gave me the key and said, "you're good to go."
I drove that truck for a month because they were too lazy to put the warranty paperwork through the system. After a series of phone calls they finally put the paperwork through and had it fixed the next day.
The torque converter was bad in my truck and they ended up doing over $2000 worth of work to it.
I didn't complain though because I put over 1000 miles on that 2004 Ram and man it was a smooth riding truck. The funny thing is that I didn't even think about power braking until I was bringing it back to the dealership when my friend asked if I had done it yet. I said, "no, but watch this." I burned it down right in front of the dealership before I pulled in to give it back to them.

When we got my wife's 2006, they offered a 3rd party warranty for it for something along the lines of $2800. If it'd been half of that, I'd consider it, but just way to much.
I am a computer salesman, and see the advantage to extended warranties and protection/service plans, but still, there's a certain point where it gets to be to much. $2800 was over 25% of what we were paying for the car itself.
