I love this thread, but I gotta tell ya...I feel so unprepared compared to all you guys here. I only have my set of basic tools, jumper cables, matches, a shovel, and a winter hat...
I think it's time for me to upgrade my stock

Jumper cables. Tire pressure gauge. A childs car seat... (truck seat?) and assorted bric-a-brac from kids leaving stuff in the truck. It doesn't take many long trips, so, I don't bother carrying tools. During the winter months, I carry a 20 foot log chain though. Never pass up an opportunity to make a few bucks pulling someone out of a snow bank.

I hear ya -- I forgot about the jumper cables, Haynes manual, tire step (I love that thing!), Superchips tuner (for running the idle up, mainly, since I leave the thing set to the towing tune), 200W inverter (for the netbook which has the FSM on disk), two cheap blue tarps, cooking grate, spare GPS, long handled magnetic retriever (great when you drop a bolt and can't find it), chain and padlock for when something goes in the bed of the truck into an area where locking it down seems sensible, and Tijuana Gas Card (manual transfer pump). I've got to add in some new tire chains and replace my recovery strap kit since my old one got permanently borrowed, and they'll be going in before the snow flies less than a month from now.

Given how much of the surrounding area is sparsely populated, without cell phone service, and not very well traveled (especially after dark), it doesn't make sense to go out unprepared. Even if it does cost me in the fuel bill to haul all that crap around.
