any jeep nuts in here?
That would be a shame, especially with a good 4.0 I6 in it. 4WD XJs with decent bodies are in HUGE demand around here and fetch big bucks still, even with blown engines AND transmissions people want them for the body and solid axles front and rear. Good running 4.0, 4x4 XJs will fetch $5000 around here with 150k miles on them easy. About the only vehicles with that kinda of age going for more $ around here are Wranglers.
If I had the opportunity with a donor vehicle sitting right there with a transmission for the taking, I'd be swapping it out and either build myself up a killer off-road rig or sell the thing for a few grand..

May have already been answered, but the answer is NO. The Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 uses the 42RE/RH. The cherokee has the AW4.
I've owned 2 ZJ's one a 5.2 that was a little beat up with only 118k on it, paid $1200 for. It was totaled by some idiot making an illegal turn, but very reliable. My second was an immaculate 96 with 160k and the I6 that i paid a little over 2k for iirc. Only sold because my dad was getting a new ram and i wanted his old one (my current one). Love having a full size, but those jeeps are rock solid in reliability and capability.

It might be that down here in the deep south, rust isn't an issue on these things like it is up north. Unless it's been used as an "off-road beater" they are usually in real good shape aside from maybe faded paint from the harsh sun we have.
I've seen some ZJs in pretty damn good shape sell for pretty cheap down here, even lower than a comparable year XJ, BUT these always seem to be 4x2s, 4x4s still command a pretty high price tag in these parts...

I traded my '91 4dr xj for my ram straight across, and wish i hadn't. It had 160k on it and was in great shape. Nothing wrong with it, 4x4 worked great, strong 4.0. Now I'm looking at a $1400 transmission replacement, thats going to go behind a motor that has multiple oil leaks, and in front of a transfer case that i haven't opened yet (to check for damages), and axles that need gears. Oh, and I got almost 27mpg driving it from WA down here. Man i'm stupid sometimes.
