any jeep nuts in here?
May have already been answered, but the answer is NO. The Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 uses the 42RE/RH. The cherokee has the AW4.
I've owned 2 ZJ's one a 5.2 that was a little beat up with only 118k on it, paid $1200 for. It was totaled by some idiot making an illegal turn, but very reliable. My second was an immaculate 96 with 160k and the I6 that i paid a little over 2k for iirc. Only sold because my dad was getting a new ram and i wanted his old one (my current one). Love having a full size, but those jeeps are rock solid in reliability and capability.

I've had four Grand Cherokees, the first three ('95 4x2 ZJ 5.2, '98 4x4 ZJ 4.0 and '02 WJ Laredo Sport 4x4 4.0) were all bought new and all were the ex's daily drivers. Never had a lick of a problem with any of them aside from brakes & rotors, but that's because the b*tch would go from full gas to full brake ALL THE TIME! The first two were traded at 3 years old when the 3/36 bumper-to-bumper expired and had less than 40k on them. The last was three years old when we split and had 28k on the clock. I know she traded that one on a new '06 right after we split up.
My current '02 Overland I've had since '06 and bought it used with 61k on the clock. Five years and 40k miles and I've not had to put a dime in it except for maintenance BUT now it's starting to have ALL the issues Grand Cherokees are known for. I've had to do the blend doors, a window regulator and about a month ago a rear caliper seized on me and took out the pads and rotor. Last week the cheesy plastic radiator decided to split at the seam and it's currently parked while I'm waiting for a new radiator to show up at my door.
I'll continue to fix the issues until I see a hint of a problem in the power train...
All my mom talks about is getting a new Grand Cherokee with the Hemi. I talked her into test driving one, and now she's like obsessed with getting one.
GC's are the only Jeeps I like. I would never own an XJ, not because their not good vehicles, but I've had 3 friends die in XJ's in 3 different accidents, and only one was a rollover. They can't be very safe, and that's enough for me to stay away from them.

Yep, a confirmed drunk driver that crossed the center line and hit my friend's Jeep, and another that ran a red light and hit my friend, make my friends the dumb ones, stupid piece of ****.

In ONE summer, I buried 14 of my friends due to drunk driving, in some cases theirs, in most, someone elses. When you have four funerals to go to in ONE day, and the guy that killed them gets a fine, and a couple months in jail, you start taking a REAL dim view of drunk drivers. It's the closet thing to legal murder you can get here in the states.
Oh, I agree it probably wouldn't of mattered much either what they were driving especially in the head on accident, but it's still enough that I would never own one for myself, and I wouldn't encourage a loved one to own one either.
I believe it was coincidence.... there's nothing that points to them actually being any less safe than any other suv

there you go again man...pissing people off.... You need to start listening to the little voice in your head that tells you not to make comments like this... or you will end up getting banned.

As for XJ's, they are not very crash-friendly, but they sure do make good wheelin machines!

Your not going to get very far out in the real world when you grow up with that level of maturity... not without a lot of beatings teaching you lifes lessons the hard way anyway.
