My transfer case gets so got I can't even touch it. Speedo starts to float after about ~2 hours of highway driving. Checked fluid. No metal shavings in the fluid non on the magnet either.


Thoughts? I'm lost

 

Maybe the wrong fluid? Supposed to be ATF+4. Not gear oil if that's in there.

 

Nope Valvaline ATF+4. truck only has 68k on it.

Thought it was a bearing going out but there are no metal shavings??? tcase functions just fine. no loud noises as far as i can tell.


Anyone else???

 

everything in my drivetrain gets too hot to hold your hand against. engine, trans, tcase, and rear diff.

your 96 has a plastic gear and cable that drives the speedo (i think). my old chevy used to bounce/float the speedo. i replaced both the gear and the cable and it fixed it. it was probably the cable only. i tried removing the cable and greasing it. that was a long time ago, but it seems like it helped it a little but it didn't completely stop the bouncing.

 

On the 96, there is a gear that drives a VSS. No cable involved. Gear might be wearing, or, VSS might be failing, or, might just be a bad connection somewhere.

 

I have a 231 in my YJ and it doesnt get nearly this hot.

I put a new VSS and gear about this time last year. After the last one shorted out..
