Default 1989 d350 12v should i buy?

I posted this in the diesel section but thought i would put it here too.

I'm looking at this thing, but dont know enough about 'em to make a decision. The guy says the only issue is the overdrive needs wired up. Any thoughts?

I suppose the question is why do you really want something that old? I could be way off but $2700 that include's an extra Cummin's motor seems really cheap. Can you look at it in person and test drive it?

Everything on a first gen is cheaper and easier to service than a second gen, will last longer, and its a cummins 12v. (2 actually )

He has a 72 as well......

Given that the truck comes with two engines........ not really such a bad deal. An acquaintance of mine has a slightly older version with der diesel, and he LOVES it. He wouldn't sell it for any reasonable offer..... (10 grand or better might convince him.....) Strong, reliable, indestructible. If you have the scratch, go for it.

I actually have 2 '72s, hence the screen name.

The real dilema here is that i would be trading my '95 for that plus cash. I love my '95... But I could love that too... And an extra 12v to go in my '72! My main concern is what all the truck would need to be reliable, but he says just that OD wiring.

And stewie i didnt see the second part of your post, its pretty far away. I could test drive it if i was planning on trading anyway... And i would, if it was junk it would be a waste of a lot of gas, but thats it.

i wonder why he is selling it so cheap? i don't think it would be very hard to put the OD on a toggle switch but i think if you where to want to make it automatic it might cost you about $325.

Older trucks in texas are just cheap. I have seen 2nd gen cummins for under 5k. He says theres a wiring writeup online somewhere, and its about a $20 fix. Who knows, but im not really scared about that

i don't know if i would trade your 2nd gen for that. you just put more into yours than he is asking for his.

edit: i just re read his add and he said he would be will to pay cash on top of a trade for a 4x4.

I'll see how much he is willing to put on top. If it's not enough I won't take it. I wasn't gonna consider a straight trade, since mine has a lot going for it, while that one is really just interesting cuz of the motor.

i would go for it just for the motors! to hell with the truck its in...

cummins motors are very stout dependable motors. kinda wish I could afford to get a 4BT cummins to drop into my S10..get way better fuel economy than that POS 2.5L that's in it now and last a hell of a lot longer too..of course I wouldn't be able to build it up as much as my dodge without twisting the frame in that poor little truck lol...

if you want to learn more info about that engine, go on cumminsforum.com and check out the first gen section. all the info you will ever need for that truck and engine.
