Pictures of new digs in Virginia
Stewie, I knew I recognized those mountains in your pictures. I live in Riner,va which is an hour or so drive from independence. I've dreamed of owning a place like you have. I'm sure it's more work than you know what to do with but in time that will change! Enjoy those mountains!
Thanks! Don't think I've been to Riner, but think I've heard of it.
With winter in place I need to burn off a couple of hill sides to get the weeds under control.
it's between floyd and christiansburg. small farming community turned into suburbia. I have my modest suburban 1.5 acres that I have an outdoor woodstove on and four young chickens! Great place but not my dream mini-farm.
Well, this is an old thread. I've started what I've called "Operation WeedEx". Started weed eating the hill sides to get control back from the brush! Didn't get to burn them off as I wanted to in the winter, so hard manual labor it is for me.
Anywho, I just figured I'd show off some of the work I've gotten so so far. There are a couple of before pics and mostly after pics. Can't hardly believe it's the same hill side.
(Last) Summer:

And now:

I've got bunches more pics, but that's the gist of it.
Here's a link to the whole album if anyone wants to look:

is the hill that steep that you could not use a lawn mower or was there another reason you didn't use a lawn mower? i know after i sharpen the blade on my lawn mower i will cut through stuff up to 1/2" thick. bushes, small trees, bamboo type grass. as long as i can run it over my lawnmower will usually cut it up. and spit it out but i am not running one of those new sissy lawn mowers. i use an old lawnboy. been cutting grass with it for at least 10 years and it has cut a lot of grass. think it use to cut about a 1 acre of grass every 2 weeks in the summer.
I'll see if I can't find those pics I found of this place when my grandparents first bought it, but it's Pre-WW2 built by slaves. If a slave died they buried them on the property.
Actually just yesterday a guy that lives up the road that is good friends with my grandfather and knows this property quite well said they used to hang Slaves up in the rafters...
A couple people have told this place is haunted, but I haven't noticed anything weird.

The old push mower is dead, the Murray that was used last Summer is dead and the mowing deck rotted out, and nobody around has a direct replacement.
We're getting a push mower this week, gonna use it up on the hill (after I mow the yard) instead of the weed eater, the weeds aren't too thick at the moment, but there is just so much land to clear it takes a good while to get anywhere with the weed wacker.

No, the motor is fine, I think the solenoid or whatever is dead, it worked last summer, then parked it for the winter, went to start it up and got nothing, battery was dead, charged it, and still get nothing, not even a click when you try and start it. Volt meter shows battery is good and holds its charge.
It would make a good little tractor for pulling short lengths of trees. We have a Sears Lawn Tractor, it's got a snow plow attachment too, the old druggie neighbor said it needs a carb kit. But it's a pain.
Oh if the property could tell stories I'm not sure anyone would want to live here

Edit; It takes me three days to cut the grass here, 11 acres of the stuff grrrrrr.
