With a half ton truck, you would like to have about 3" of lift to fit 285's....... Also, the larger tires are going to be rough on your gas mileage, and trans, with the more than likely stock 3.55 gears.

Even with a lift, you may still get a little rub on hard turns. (parking lot maneuvering.)

i have a 2.5" or so lift up front with diesel springs and was able to clear 35's with minimal rubbing. i have no problems clearing 285's ever, even when the plow is on.

If he gets new rims that stick out an inch or so more than stock won't that prevent the tires from rubbing on the frame/suspension components?

Maybe, it may also cause them to rub somewhere else.....
