Pretty much what everyone else has said here. The stock is basically a CAI.
I bought mine just cause I like the sound when you stomp on it. I cracked the clamps on my stock air box, and a CAI was only 30 bucks more than getting an OEM replacement..couldnt find one at a junkyard.
Reading this thread reminded me I had been intending on getting a K&N filter. So I went to Amazon and a company that sells K&N there had an opened, but unused, filter for a Dodge Ram. I just bought it for $15.56, including shipping.
mine just sucks from the engine compartment..in my case makes no difference sucking warm or cold air..damn turbos are going to compress it and heat it anyway, then the intercooler will drop its temp a bit, and if intake air is colder than 60* the grid heaters will heat it up...yeah lost cause on a diesel lol...besides diesels like running warm. they don't like the cold...diesel burns better when pre-heated.
you guys will be fine with K&N's but those are the worst possible filters to put on a turbo diesel...turbos suck so hard on the filter they will actually pull the oil right out of the filters and it will gunk up the compressors and intake. so we run dry filters.
With my turbo setup I'm drawing air from under the hood too, the intake temps are a messily 20º above ambient when cruising, no intercooler either. I'm envious of anybody who's managed to scam millions out of people who think they're actually accomplishing something with a CAI.
