Cool idea, but, I still would like to have the gauges to tell me how bad things are leaking... there will ALWAYS be some leakage past the rings...... just because you get airflow there, does NOT imply that it's rebuild time.... (valves are another proposition entirely though..... )

i was in my truck today and i was looking at the brand new compression test and the cheap tire filler with a gauge and was thinking i could build a leak down test for cheap. i stuck a air fitting in the compression testers adapter and it fit perfectly so i figure i can take the air chuck off and just spin it into the spark plug hole on my 93 or use the adapter for my 81. in total it cost me less than $30 but if i didn't buy the compression tester it would have only cost me $10 but then it would only work on my 93.
