It's best to run multiple checks. Some may be incomplete while another includes the missing information.

This one is free, and offers valuable, but limited, information; It will check if the vehicle has been reported stolen and unrecovered, or has a salvage title:

https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_awareness/vincheck

You can do an AutoCheck search by piggybacking on a dealer's account password, which is embedded in the URL.

Google will webcrawl the AutoCheck site and any report that is online at the time the spider is crawling will be recorded as a Google Search Result.

The way to find the crawled results is to use an advanced Google Search term:

dealer autocheck url:vin

You will get a bunch of results, not all of them an AutoCheck result. But some of them will be.

Look at the URL for the search results you get; you will see some refer back to an auto dealer. Choose a recent one.

Go to the link (will show some vehicle the dealer checked recently) and copy the URL displayed in the title bar of your browser. Easiest way is to click in the address bar, then use the [Select All] keyboard shortcut and then copy.

Windows OS: Control-A, Control-C = select all, copy (The Control key is usually the second key, left or right, from the spacebar)
MacOS Command-A, Command-C = select all, copy (Apple Keyboards will mark the Command key with a cloverleaf; in any case it's the key closest to the spacebar, left or right)

Paste the URL into a text program.

At the end of the copied URL you will see a VIN at the end. Cut the VIN and replace it with yours.

Note: There is no letter I, O, or Q in a VIN. If you see those, type in a number (eg 1, 0, or 0) not a letter.

Note also that every VIN check always does the integrity check using the check digits. If you type the VIN wrong, it will return an error and you can not check the VIN until you correct it.

If the first one you try doesn't work, go back to the Google search result and try another one. The passwords change and hopefully you've picked a proper dealer who has unlimited search account, but maybe you happened to pick one with a limited account that can't perform any more searches.

You have to repeat the above because no URL/Password will last for more than a few weeks at most. So you just can't keep using the same one.

I just made this URL up, so don't try using it. But the one you cut and paste will look similar. (I had to mangle them so the forum wouldn't format them as links)

h t t p ://w w w.billybobschrysler.com/vehicle_display_carfax.php?vin=2T1BU4EE6BC601284&s id=%205080700

Cut the VIN (at php?vin= ) and enter yours.

So:
h t t p ://w w w.billybobschrysler.com/vehicle_display_carfax.php?vin=9A9AA9AA9AA999999 (where 9= number and A= letter)

This particular one has the &sid=% ... on the end. No idea if you need that; I just used a VIN and nothing behind it.

No idea how to get a CarFax report for free, but you should get one somehow. It's common for one report to have information the other one or two do not have.
