Each state has a vehicle code that addresses requirements of passenger vehicles. I've quoted here on DF what they are for California in regards to auxiliary lights. That is where you inform yourself of what is the legal use of aux lights.
e.g., no forward facing, cannot be a part of factory light system, etc.

^^ And here the Stater's are the real ******. It's like they need to hand out BS traffic violation tickets to fulfill themselves inside. I have always had good luck driving trucks though, they seem to have it out for the ricers more.
