i have an older 009L with a 14 inch bar that's awesome. i bought it on ebay for $95 a few years ago. for a newer saw, look at the 017. you can also put a 12 inch bar on them.

I would get a 16in bar with the biggest engine I could find. Get back to wheeling quicker.

Nice tech thread btw.

Stihl is a great product, up here nothing less than a 18" bar, must be over 70cc. Have a look at a MS-441

Edit; Older Husqvarna are very good saws as well.

Mine's a Stihl Farm Boss, the older version of the current MS290, with a 24" bar and a full chisel chain. I encounter mostly softwoods around here and it's just fine for that, but in dense hardwoods I have to drop down to the 16" bar.

When buying a chainsaw the important things to know are (a) your own experience level and limitations, and (b) what you expect to cut with it. Too much power head and too aggressive a chain and you might end up cutting a lot of wood very quickly, then bleeding out when fatigue leaves you unable to control that monster saw. There's no sense going there, and that's one of the reasons I like my little Farm Boss just fine.

I have poulan pro 18" that I have uses for 4 seasons and have cut up 100s of trees with it and it just wont break or quit. Just a cheap option for you. I also have let it get covered in ice and was still able to start it, first pull everytime.

You should get one of those custon saws they use in competition tree felling. Like an old Honda CR500R engine on a huge bar. I mean, what could go wrong?

Chainsaw? You're supposed to push it over with the Ram!
