Default question about my tibby...

Ok no luck at other forums, and i always have luck here so here it goes...

as most of you know i have a 2001 Hyundai Tiburon 5spd 2.0L with 105K...car was going fine while i was driving on highway to work until fifth gear spit back into neutral....didnt think to much of it, so i put it back in 5th and about 15 seconds later, it pops back into neutral. I keeps going this, but wont start doing it until its been driving for at least 10 minutes...only happens in fifth gear, and when it starts, it keeps doing it. Did it while it was cruise control was on as well.

I can hold it in 5th gear and keep it from popping into neutral...did it most of the way to work and all the way back which is 75 miles one way...holding it in place will keep it in 5th, but as soon as i let go, it will pop back into neutral.

While driving and my hand on shifter when i give it gas i can feel it trying to push into neutral then when i let off the gas the shifter goes back up into the gear (hard to explain) I changed the trans fluid about 2 months ago as well, and its still full.

I was told it could either be a stake nut, internal gear forks, or the syncro...any of these sound like what it could be? Never had a problem like this before so im stumped...

and no exaggeration, my warentee ran out 480 miles ago.....................figures.......thinkin about just getting rid of it, cuz i know it needs a clutch, timing belt, breaks all the way around, charcoal canister purge valve, muffler, flexpipe, and some other small odds and ends....not worth it to me since ill be bring the 03 elantra i bought home this weekend.

but i would like to figure out what the problem is, for future reference

another reason i still have my dodge.....my tibby needs alot of work at 105K.....my truck, which is at 229,xxx stills runs like a champ, and only needs about $150 in parts to make it 100%....well 100% to me.....another reason i love my dodge, cuz she keeps me driving

Check your shift linkage, and make sure it is going all the way in to gear. If that doesn't solve it, prolly time for a rebuild/replacement.

nope....shes done....i was driving, and i go to shift into third, and well it just grinds and spits back out, so 5th wont stay in gear, 3rd is gone, and 2nd grinds a bit when going into gear, 1st and 4th are as smooth as can be though...

but i changed the alternater in the 03 elantra i just bought, thing runs mint, cant even hear it running...but the tibby is going bye bye, i bought the elantra for my wife, and im going to be going back to my ol dodge as my dd.....

Yeah, that sounds like you are pretty much done there...... probably those gears have a shaft in common.....

Ah well. Hope you don't have to drive too far to work. Gets expensive.

screw it i got the 03 elantra i bought to my house yesterday and that thing runs mint, took it to get a sticker today and she passed with flying colors, the underneath is mint absolutly no rust which is awesome since its a Maine car.

But the tibby is gone, im going to let you all know why.

01 Tiburon- I owe 12,400 on it still (my credit sucks and have 18.49% interest, i knew i got screwed but i needed a car BAD at the time) Payments are $86 a week, and the car needs tranny, clutch, timing belt, brakes and rotors front and rear, muffler, flexpipe, Purge valve, coil packs, and intake gasket....so that would make for a very expensive car thats only worth 3K.

03 Elantra- got it from a buddy for $2,000....KBB is $3500 for it. I am making payments of whatever i can afford a week, plus i already have the car in my possesion. This car needs absolutly nothing.....

So i think you guys can tell why im getting rid of the tibby.....and i still have my truck so it doesnt hurt my feelings watching that car go bye bye

Sometimes you gotta let go to get out! My wife had an Elantra when we first married. Engine blew just under 60,000, but warranty replaced it. Later sold it to her son and she bought new 07 Sonata. We have 160,00 on it and it runs like a top. Better car than I thought ir was. Only thing was those Koreans twisted my head. Darn oil filter is on TOP of engine! Got to pull the cover off engine to get to it. The first time I attempted oil change, I gave up and took it to a shop.

Glad you found something so clean and affordabe.
