Default Truck hard to steer

My 2000 stopped steering. How do i know if its the power steering pump or the lower unit?
It has fluid. I had the power steering pump cap loose while i was trying to muscle it into my garage and fluid blasted out. lol messy.

I dont want to just buy a new pump on a trial and error basis. cash is tight.

Can anything go wrong with the lower gear box??
Thanks!!

Complete lock up of lower gearbox in not likely. Normal failure is sloppy steering. Check to see if something is binding the pittman arm, drag link, etc.

Sounds like you may hzve sheared the shaft on the pump. Can you steer with muscle while driving? You didn't indicate any leaks or other physical prob.

Hose fittings all dry? Steering shaft OK?

Thanks I'll take a closer look at the junk under the nose.

The wheel does turn just VERY hard.
Shaft is together just rusty.
Pully spining like normal.
I had a nasty squeel when i first tsarted it . I thought that was the big belt.
No leaks.

I'm going to get the nose off the floor and see if it is still hard to turn. I would think it would be easyer???

This is my first time messing with power steering.

+1 for the QCluuuuuuuuv!

Yeah, when pump goes out you can actually still drive/steer. How heavy do you think the truck is?

The pressure lines are on there pretty good. Upon removal of the pump, hopefully you follow your Haynes/Chilton manual or find the downloadable copy of the Factory Service manual in the DIY subforum section.

Take the pump to a shop that typically for free will pull the pulley if you don't have a proper puller. New pump will have means to put pulley back on on and oring for pressure line.

Napa has em good.

Since "ruck stopped steering" left me with no clue as to what this thread was about other than Inga's rucksack stopped somebody from steering, I'm going to change the title to something that makes more sense.
