Update: I've been tweaking the fuel system for maximum power

I first started out running 4-4.5PSI fuel pressure, then I turned it up to 5-5.5, now I've turned it up to 7PSI, seems about right, it's running a tad on the rich side, which I like because it always has plenty of fuel in the intake so if I stomp on it it doesn't lean out and it can make power faster without waiting for the carb to catch up. And, if I stomp a few times really fast I can make it smoke like a oilburner

Then why does his truck spit black smoke? lol
I have no idea what my 76 runs, but it doesn't smoke.

(no oil smoke either.)

i didn't see anything about black smoke.

your 76 could have the stock dodge truck return setup which should deal with any extra fuel pressure.

If it had a return line I'd see two fuel lines coming and going from the engine, right?
If so I'm pretty sure I don't have it.

His truck is putting out black smoke because every time he pumps the pedal he is putting in mass amounts of fuel via the accelerator pump. Great way to wash down the cyld walls and eat up rings. Carbs where first year shop class in school I guess they don't teach this old stuff anymore.

At least I know for sure that my thought process wasn't wrong...

if you didn't have a return line then you would most likely have vapor lock issues since big blocks were more prone to vapor lock when return line was disconnected than small blocks were. your return line should T off your fuel filter by your fuel pump.
