Default oil pressure gauge issues...

and no it's not the same issues as everyone has...well sort of. I have used the search and have mostly found threads with stuff I already know... I know 1) our truck are notorious for low oil pressure and 2) they are also known for a poor sending unit design. Ive replaced the sender once before and now have to do it again. I do run thicker oil in the summer, no horrible ticking, clattering noises, high volume pump a few years back etc...what I want to know is this...I have a SunPro that I want to install but is there any way to stop the check gauges light from coming on? I don't want to T off and use another stock sender that'll die again. Has anyone completely eliminated the factory gauge/idiot light with any success Or am I stuck T'ing off? Actually the light doesn't bother me so much as I have a steering column pod that would cover it I guess, it's the "dinger" that makes me crazy. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I am assuming that your assumptions are not necessarily correct. I do not believe the oil gauge system is notorious for failing. Some have failed, but as crappy as my Ram was treated by PO, and it is spot on, I have to disagree. With engine wear, pressure will be lower. Bad sender, will have gauge issues.

Put an additional one on for peace of mind, but the failed sender will alert the PCM which sets the CEL. Not a good way to disable that.

Wonder if that high volume pump has a pressure higher than switch's normal operating range....

maybe I should be a little clearer...I never said the oiling systems were known to fail, I said they are known to have low oil pressure as compared to some other engines, especially with age, at idle etc, but I have been reading especially on this forum that lots of people have run into the same issue with the sender. My gauge is doing what it was before, dropping to zero than coming back up to a set point, it does it when it wants (no set time ex: cold or hot, off idle, hiway speed etc and it does not rise either. I am a motorcycle mechanic, I know when an engine has no oil pressure etc, and it did the same thing before I replaced the last sending unit. I know my engine is not "tight" but Im sure its the sending unit. It stopped working completely this morning.

You will find out soon enough as to what your oil psi is once you install the mech gauge. No way to bypass the oil sender. Find a used one (sender) then try this; sender+adapter cap + grease zerk, load with greeze using a grease gun until a good psi is read on the dash, zip tie it off somewhere for good.

I have seen a number of posts related to what appears to be low oil pressure. I get over 40 psi, and this weekend, at highway speed I was showing almost 60. I checked mine at idle with mechanical gauge when I first joined DF just to know what I was reading was correct. I have 144k on mine. Other's problems have included bad senders as well as actual low pressure (due to wear).

Best thing is to verify what is actually going on. Previous owners on my Ram never replaced anything...... I suspect sender is original, but cannot verify.
