don't kid yourself. they are not invincible in snow and ice. seen a kid pass me one year in the snow and ice...I was putting around doing about 25-30 tops in my lil S10 (87 2.5L 4-spd manual 2WD with posi) and he decides I'm going too slow, (speed limit is 40-45 anyway) so he goes flying around me and speeds away in his WRX....well about a mile or so up the road I catch up to him...He slammed the car into the ditch. you're a fool if you think that AWD or ABS will save you on ice. I kept on puttin by... I knew better than to try and drive fast on snow and ice...I don't even drive my diesel in 4x4 much faster than the S10 when the roads get like that...just not worth it.
