Cam and crank sensor replace
2000 ram 1500 5.2 does any one know how much the dealer charges to replace both sensors? I thought all most 800.00 a little high Even for dealer? I realize they have over head but at most 2hr labor + parts seems way to much I would not think it would call for 6hr labor?

First of all, I'd rather have stevie wonder work on my truck than a dealer. They'd screw mother theresa out of some extra cash if they had the chance. Find a local shop who will let you provide your own parts, go to rock auto or advance or something and buy the sensors yourself and then have them installed. I bet that'll about cut the price in half. Dealers always seem to conveniently "find" other things that are wrong with the truck in the process of fixing whatever the truck was there for originally. My sister's jeep was in for a recall on an INTERIOR part. That tech must have had some damn good eyes because apparently he managed to see that the rear brakes were "totally worn" from inside the jeep. unbelievable.

those sensors run about $50 or less at your local parts store, up to $75-100 each at the dealer. install should be at most an hour each.
both are difficult to reach and require a little patience. cam sensor is in the distributor, under the rotor and requires only a screwdriver to change. its called the "secondary coil pickup" or "pickup coil" in the parts catalogs. crank sensor is in the top of the bell housing, passenger side, behind the valve cover. 2 small bolts and an electrical connector.
google the discount codes for Advance Auto. you can save about $30 on $100 or $40 on $110 (or something like that).

Neither is difficult to install. But the real question is...
Why would you replace these? What would make one think they both need replacing? Parts swapping to troubleshoot is irrational and is something a legislative committee would attempt. Throw everything at it and hope for the best!

Had been intermittently been getting a code for cam sensor but still ran well then it took about ten tries to start and when it did it ran poorly. The dealer all so checked it and cam to the Same conclusion. It's not mine belongs to my brother in law who's has been going through cancer. His wife ok'd the work before I could tell him I could do it. I just thought the dealer was out of line on price. 300.00 for 2 sensors cap and rotor then 3 hours labor + diagnostic 60.00 all they did was pull codes which we knew.
They missed getting her on the bus to get her to work on time she had to rent a car so more money .

Dang, man. Sorry for the tough breaks. Hope your BIL recovers. Let's start at the known point of failure. Download the FSM HERE and read though the relevant sections.
Let's try to some money and get it fixed at the same time. The CPS is in distributor cap. Whatever you do - do not loosen the bolt at the base of distributor and turn it. Remove air filter box and lay across engine. Remove disty cap and look inside. Is rotor and cap worn or look arc's? If so, now is the time to replace it. Make sure cps is secure. If not this could cause intermittent issue. Also check condition of plugs and wires.
Post back what you find. Deal with Crank sensor afterwards if still needed.
A dealer may recommend changing a bunch of parts - to increase the revenue for the shop. Not a good diagnostic process.
