2nd Gen Windshield Replacement Question
Hi Guys,
Would like to hear from those who have replaced their windshields. Did you have any issues? Do you have any rust on the bottom of your doors? bed?
I need a new windshield and when getting a quote the woman is telling me that there is most likely rust where the glass sits and I will need to bring my truck to a body shop to have it repaired?? It is a very common problem??
Any input appreciated.

Any place that water can pool is a problem area. The lower door rust is usually the first place you will see it. Have them pull off the moldings and take a look. It's not a 100% but you will have an idea if you see any signs of rust. Where do you live? People in the rust belt experience these problems the most.
Depends how bad the rust is and where. I had a windshield replaced in my old Acura it had a little rust and they started saying that it will leak if I don't get it fixed. I told them to use a little common sense and just fill the gap with extra sealant and put tape over it till it cures. It never leaked.
"common sense"? What is this mythical beast you speak of?
Actually, I think it's an oxymoron, a lot like "military intelligence", as it most certainly is NOT common....... More's the pity.

I had my windshield replaced a few years back, about 4 years ago. Now have rust issues left side, on floor, rocker panel, and lower left fender.
I have been told by a glass installer that when installing a new windshield, the V.I.N. has to line up exactly on center with the lets say window opening where you read the V.I.N. through. If not you will have leakage, and I do. when I took this truck in for new paint it was stripped right down to bare metal, a new right front fender installed, bed removed it looked brand new. When stripped down there wasn't a pin hole to be found anywhere, other than the right front fender. My windshield where the V.I.N. is located does not line up exactly where it is supposed to, its off about 1/4 -1/2 inch.

Had my windshield replaced a few years ago now, done by a local glass company in Galax, Va, cost around $220.
They did a fantastic job, no leaks, no rust, no regrets!

We had our replaced in the winter (inspection failure) it was a replace it or park it scenario.
The glas guy was a little concerned about proper sealing only because of the ambient temp being around 35°F.
His expressed concern was valid obviously but the situation was one that forced ignoring his warnings and advisories of having it done in a garaged setting elsewhere.
It was done in the cold, in our driveway and the only thing I can say HE did wrong was untuck the windshield to door strip.
I don't know quite hot to explain it but it was basically causing cabin wind noise and draftiness from the forward door seals being unable to seal.
I pried them out gently with a screwdriver the following spring and the wind noises and drafts were dramatically reduced but not gone.
Any idea where to look or what to replace along the firewall for curing drafts?
I know in the steering wheel area is or should be at least one rubber boot for the instruments/dash wiring harness, but the air leak seems to be in Both front floor pan/firewall corner areas. I suspect door strips are bad, but any advice is better than replacement parts costs for things not needed.
BTW at nearly 16 years old She is just now showing bed fender rust, and standard issue door bottom from the outer window seals leaking, rockers are starting to show stains from the doors, but no evidence anything it "Rotted" yet.
