Default Manual transmission question

I'm posting this in the general discussion, mainly because I haven't looked into it a lot and I'm not in dire need of an answer, but I just didn't know if anybody would have an answer for my question. I sold a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 with 318/nv3500 4x4 awhile back, and it's for sale again. When I had it, the transmission had a crack in the bellhousing, so I replaced it. Well apperently it cracked a completely different transmission. So I was wondering what would cause this, and if i could swap an nv4500/360 into it, and me not have the problem again. Already found a donor motor and transmission for about 1000. Thanks in advance

Get the pcm, t-case, and driveshafts as well. Engine/trans/t-case will drop right in, and bolt right up, the correct PCM will make sure it runs right. Might have to get creative with the driveshafts though.. Having the 2500 shafts will make life a bit easier.....

Well I think I could wrangle those up somehow if I decide to do this project. The driveshafts would be tricky, cause it's a single cab short bed. The engine I found was from a 97, so it should plug right up, but it had an auto behind it, so I'd have to change a couple of things. The transmission didn't have a year listed, would that matter?

On the manual, not really. Only difference would be where the PCM gets its hint for the speedo. 97 and older get it from the VSS, that is usually on the rear output from the trans, or t-case. (depending on 2 or 4 wheel drive.) 98 and up don't have that sensor, and get its clue from the rear wheel speed sensor on the rear diff.
