Where to get paint
I am looking into repainting my truck, the paint is faded, and scratched, my question is where is the best place to get PR4 red paint, should i do single stage or base coat, and how many gallons to repaint the whole truck?
I just go to the painters supply store in town. (they serve body shops.) They can mix pretty much any color you want. Factory is base-coat, clear-coat. If you want a quality job though, its all about the prep work. (and also what costs most of the labor when payin' someone else to do it....) Probably only take a couple quarts to do the whole truck.
Base coat clear coat will give you the best shine and durability. Remember when you thin it whatever you have multiplies essentially by 2. So one gallon turns into 2. I would get one gallon of each. That would be more than enough. You want more then you need incase you mess up. If you need any pointers or help let me know

it depends on what you are looking for in how much shine and smooth you want the paint to be.
it easiest to get a smooth and shiney paint job with BC CC. it's usually the most expensive way also.
you can also spray a single stage and then mix clear into the paint for the final 2 coats. this gives the single stage look with the BC CC shine.
usually BC CC paint is easiest to sand and buff. single stage usually isn't as easy. mixing clear into the color is usually in the middle of the 2.
as others posted it's easiest to just go down to your local paint supplier store and buy everything. it's also usually the most expensive way also.
there are a lot of online paint sellers. getting a specific color mixed and getting it shipped can get pricey also.
also paint manufacturers also sell premium line of paint that body shops use. this is the most current up to date paint that has the best durability. they also sell a budget line of paint. i am a PPG certified painter. the budget line is called omni.
if looking for something close could save you some $$$ and buy some generic color paint that's close from summit racing or other similar sellers. eastwood also has a nice selection. TP tools and supplies also has a nice selection.
red colors are usually the most expensive. yellows are close behind.
as far as how much you need. i recently painted my 2000 ram standard cab complete including a lower jamb blend, the front bumper and a rear roll pan. i did a make it look better maaco job. it took close to 1 gallon of omni single stage urethane mixed 4-1-1, 4 color, 1 catalyst, 1 reducer. i painted 2 coats. i also sprayed omni epoxy primer thinned out as a sealer before the top coat. if i wanted to make it look better i would have added a 3rd coat.
as i posted it was a quickie make it look better. i just wet the car down then scrubbed it with a red scotch brite pad with kitchen cleanser for a cleaning action and to better prep the under coat for improved top coat adhesion. no sand paper was used. my total in dealer cost was $350. my truck is bright yellow.
you can reduce cost even more by using a standard acrylic enamel paint. this paint can be painted without using catalyst, just reduce and spray. it doesn't have much durability but it will work. it also can be painted with a catalyst for better durability and faster cure times. there are also synthetic enamel paints on the market, there was 20+ years ago when i was painting used cars. it's even cheaper than acrylic enamel. it also can be painted with and without catalyst.
if you want a really nice job with good durability i would figure at least $1500+ in paint cost alone
all i can say is do your research and make your decision.
