I have a 2002 Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4x2 with an 8’ bed and a 5.9L Cummins engine, and I plan on it being my daily driver for at least another 7 years.

Currently my tires are 265/70r16, and the door jamb sticker lists 245/75r16 as the stock size. I’m going to buy tires in the next month or so and am planning on buying an all-terrain tire to help address my getting stuck problem. I live in the woods and this truck can get stuck in wet grass. I understand the root of the problem is a heavy front end and a light back end.

My question is, am I better going back to the stock tire size and (slightly) increasing the weight/contact-area ratio on the back end, or sticking with the wider tires for the decreased weight/contact-area ratio in the front end.

Also, does anyone have any experience with Sumitomo Encounter AT tires?

 

Run a build sheet for your truck from here. (equipment listing) That will show you what size tires your truck actually left the factory with.

Changing your tire size probably won't make all that much of a difference, changing the tread pattern, on the other hand, most certainly will.

 

All terrians really suck in the mud they are really good in the snow

 

Personally I like my general grabber at/x 265/75/R16.. I've never gotten stuck, even when the tread was getting low

 

300 pounds in the box would help and probably make it ride better.
