I installed a K&N CAI and removed the turbo silencer ring expecting to get a turbo whistle but what I got was no turbo whistle at all and cab noise/drone so loud at 50mph plus that you can't stay in the truck...maybe the noise drowned out the turbo whistle...I did a 12 hour trip this week and had to stop for ear plugs to make it...my poor dog wasn't so lucky...I am going to reinstall the silencer ring and hope that helps the cab drone if not I will have to put the factory intake back on...also it seems to me I should have gotten at least some turbo whistle...K&N people did not know a thing...any suggestions would be appreciated...Tx.

 

The stock air intake IS COLD AIR. The ring is a deflector, Guide if you will to get the air flowing smoothly and defeating turbulence. Removing it will make more noise as you found out.

 

You are soooo right...noise level was over the top...I just reinstalled the silencer ring this morning...so hoping it is bearably now...I want to keep the K&N CAI if possible because I got more throttle response but I won't trade too much noise for peace and quiet.

 

I put the silencer ring back in, still got the bad drone noise at 60mph so I have ordered an FTE 4 X 30" resonator to install just after the downpipe and see if the helps. I am thinking the stock resonator is not tuned at the factory to handle the open CIA increase air flow...people on this site say they have had good luck with it quieting their systems .
