Size of spindle nut on Ram 1500
Hey everyone! This is probably my 3rd post, so I'm still a newbie on this forum. I own a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 QuadCab 2 wheel-drive. My front driver wheel bearing is shot and I ordered a new one, which should be here tomorrow. I just need to know what size the spindle nut is so that I can go purchase the socket tomorrow. Also, what size are the 3 bolts that hold the hub assembly on the steering knuckle? I just bought the truck and money is slim so I have yet to purchase a Haynes manual (or similar). Thanks a alot everyone!
PS~ Do you guys think that I should be able to remove the 3 bolts holding the hub on with a 3/8 Ratchet? Or should I go get a 1/2" ? Thanks!

haha autozone is going to tell you soemthing wack. they told me 32mm which is way off .I used a 2 and 3/4 torque wrench socket it doesnt look like it will fit (around the nut) but it does and your going to have a hard time finding a 2 and 3/4 non torque wrench socket i drove around for 3 hours, 2 autozone's 3 napas but any way it was about 40 bucks, dont mess it up and you can return it when your done (if you want to) I dont recall the 3 bolts on the hub assembly size but 3/8s will do it but your going to need some leverage like a pipe around your socket wrench, any who this project isnt really that bad if you ever changed brakes before you can get this done in like 20 minutes me and my buddy did my driver side hub assembly about 4 weeks ago and saved 500 bucks (300 on labor thats what 4wheelparts wanted, and got the part discount from carquest, my buddys brothers girlfriend's dad works there)
enjoy!

1500 Hub bearing retaining bolts- 14MM 12pt. Get at least a 1/2" drive ... may need a 3/4" set.
All I can find on spindle nuts is 4x4 information. Still looking for 4x2.

Thanks for the information guys. It does seem like there is a plethora of info for the 4x4 but not so much for the 4x2.... What is the difference between a non-torque wrench socket, and a torque wrench socket? But 2-3/4" did infact work for your spindle nut Rusty? And 40$ for a socket?! DAMN!
Im sorry I meant impact wrench.....a impact wrench socket is made stronger and more thicker depending on the brand its ethier heat treated or a strong alloy but ethier way it goes its going to be a little fatter then regular sockets which can cause problems in limited space applications, however it did work for my 4X4 dana 44 axle I totaly missed that part about yuors being a 4x2, what do you have up front ?
It's just a stock 4x2 ... I just went out and bought a Haynes Manual and it says nothing about the spindle nut size. I looked all over and still can't find the size. Anyone?
Thanks again for the info Rusty, but I assume that your spindle nut is a different size seeing as it was from a 4x4 truck

ok i have this manual i downloaded FROM THIS FORUM for the 2001 dodge ram (it was under a post titled merry christmas i just tried to search for it you dont wanna know how that went) and yours being 4x2 you should have indepent suspension up front and it doesnt give the size i dont think theres a torque chart and it says you the hub/bearing spindle nut is N-m 251 and the toque ft/lbs is 185 i have no idea what N-m is but its a start I gotta run to the store and try and look a little more later, but try to find that manual if you can its huge!
I searched for that manual. I now know what you meant by "i just tried to search for it you dont wanna know how that went"... There's probably a million posts saying "Merry Christmas" ... LOL
