Default Fuel Economy!!!!

Okay so I ran my first tank of gas through my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. The truck is stock with the exception of a catback Flowmaster exhaust. I was able to get 204 miles out of a tank and when I filled it back up, it took 22.6 gallons and that equals out to 9.02!!! WTH!!! I mean, I knew Dodge's didn't get the best but under 10 mpg is rediculous. The motor is a 5.2L, thank god I didn't get a 5.9!

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

a very long read
but with dozens of 'real' ideas on how to improve MPG on Rams:

https://dodgeforum.com/m_447500/tm.htm

Since your truck is new to your ownership
suspect the catalytic converter being partially plugged
(very common on Dodges and there is a factory recall)
and/or some of the oxygen sensors being 'poisioned'
by sulfur in gasoline or metals from burning lube oil
(also very common, as are poisioned fuel tank level senders)

Thanks for the info. Can I just take the truck to a Dodge dealership and they will replace it?

Damn, you need some serious maintenance on your 5.2. Read up on my engine build in my sigline. I typically get 15/16mpg on the highway (not loaded) and about 12/13 when hauling my trailer; however, on a recent trip from Illinois to Canada, I was eeking out 9mpg hauling this old VW bus.

I get 19-21 with my 93 ctd empty!

thats cummins turbo diesel man!

19Ram99 - sounds liek you should disconnect the battery for 15 min or so allowing the computer to reset. top it of with good fuel (no arco, 7-11, etc). then drive it like you intend and the com, puter should learn anew.

VWand Dodge...still got air cooled??? stop on by and see us at www.azbaja.com or our friends at http://www.chircoestore.com/catalog/smf/index.php. aircooled all the time.

Still air-cooled. Got a 1965 Beetle that is the next project. I was hauling the Bus for a friend.

Mileage that bad points towards leaking plenum or clogged cat.

I will check both of those. Any diagrams or anything on the plenum?
