Default 180 degree t stat

well i have noticed a lot of you guys use these i see that you say they allow the truck to run better and give you a little more power but its slightly reduces your gas mileage..... the questions i have are
1. Does it make a noticeable difference in power?
2. How much of a gas mileage change is there?
3. How hard is it to change?
4. Did you flush all of your coolant when you did it?

And by the way im flushing my coolant anyway so Im just curious how much coolant am i gonna need to fill it back up?

1. You really wont notice a difference with jst the t-stat......if you add other stuff they all work together better.
2. I didnt notice a difference......
3. Its not hard...but sorta time consuming since dodge decided to put a weird lip on the clamp that bolts to the motor, so you have to take off crap to get to it. Once you get it off the first time you can grind or bend the lip off and not have to take all that crap off it you need to mess with it again

4. I changed mine when I changed my water pump, so I took off the hose that runs from the radiator to the water pump off and let it drain.

180 thermostats will slightly reduce MPG

Kenne Bell company says in their dyno testing a 180 thermostat produces no measurable increase in torque or horsepower at any rpm at wide open throttle on a 1998 Magnum 5.9V8

I agree with the previous posts. The original 195 stat will give better gas milage.
There are some "benefits" to the 180 stat:
You may get a CEL or MIL light.
You may spend more time working on your truck.
You may have to do the job again.

Sorry for the sarcasm but I was not happy(to put it politely) after changing to a 180 stat and getting the CEL because the engine was cold too long. I guess I didn't do enough research because if I would have heard there was any chance the CEL would come on I would not have spent the time to change the stat. So, hopefully my pain is your gain.

I have the 180 thermostat and runs better dont know much about the mpg been the same since new. And regarding the check engine light it only came on one day when the weather was below zero with howling winds here in illinois but it went away the next warm up 20 degrees lol id say get it at least for the psychological effect of your truck with more power

i have no regrets with the 180 stat. my 97 fullsize 5.2 loved running cooler, and now my 05 4.7 is the same way. by running cooler it benifits from the pinging due to various gas issues. it wont affect your mileage..if you go lower than a 180 the truck will stay in open loop thinking it is in warm up mode. but a cooler running engine is a happy one.
