Round open air cleaner
Okay, im interested in putting one of those open tound air cleaner assemblies on my 98 dodge ram 1500 slt laramie with the 360. What do you need to do this beside the assembly and how much of a difference does it make over the stock assembly. Im running the stock assembly right now with a drop in K&N air filter. I also thought it made the truck look better as well. Thanks, any help appreciated

When you install the new round type open air cleaner system you will also need to purchase a stand alone breather since you will no longer need the breather hose that runs from the drivers side valve cover to the air cleaner assembly box. I purchased the Spectre # 42859 from Checker Auto, just be sure to pry out the old breather tube carefully as to not damage the rubber gromet.
You may also want to read up on this long thread as there are many good posts within about fuel mpg and better throttle response at certain rpm ranges.

yeah all you need is the assembly ($70), breather ($10 - 15), s-bolt (which you can hand make with the straight bolt they give you) and I also opted for the round K & N filter ($45).
now it is going to be a tight fit but it looks awesome and sounds cool too.
another thing you might want to do while you are in there is maybe change out the cap and rotor ($30 maybe) I did mine because I have over 200,000 miles on my truck.
good luck!

okay ill check it out thanks!! So will any 14 inch air cleaner work? I would like to get that fancy mopar one but im 16 and on a tight budget so i was looking at the summit one for $15.00. Do you know anything about changing the thermostat too? What soes it do if you cahnge it to the 180 degree one or whichever one everyone switches to for performance?
What exactly are both of yall referring to when you say a breather. Where would i get one at. I live in georgia and the only stores we have are advance, auto zone, and oreilly's. Here's a pic of my truck. Tell me what yall think.

The 190 degree thermostat will allow it to open up at that temperature and start to circulate the anti-freeze coolant within the coolant system thru the radiator....thus cooling your engine. The 180 degree thermostat will allow it to open at that temperature instead of 190 degrees, thus keeping your engine slightly cooler with makes the engine run better and last longer since your engine temp has been reduced resulting in engine components not getting as hot. Least thats how I understand it, correct me if Im wrong.
Okay, thats what i understand too. Which thermostatwould you reccomend and what do you have in your truck. One more off topic thing, you have a nice truck and where did you get your flow's put on at. Im looking in july when i get money to get dual exhausts. What do you think, is yours true duals or single in dual out?? Im just looking for the sound really??

if you want as loud of a sound as you can get you can do what i did and get super 40 delta flows going into dumps (turndowns, whatever). installed it cost $180 and it is LOUD when you stomp on it but it's not to bad going down the highway.
The breather is a way to get air in and out of the driver side valve cover

autozone carries them for $12 just make sure it fits in the grommet you take the hose out of.

If you have the stock air cleaner assembly installed on your truck you will have a breather tube that runs from the drivers side valve cover to the drivers side air cleaner box. The breather works in conjunction with the pcv valve located on the passenger side valve cover. The breather draws in freash air from the air cleaner box to the crankcase which helps removes leftover blowby gases which may cause sludge within the engine. These gases are expelled via the pcv valve back into the intake manifold where they are reburnt during combustion.
If you install an aftermarket round type air cleaner assembly you will need to install a stand alone breather element to replace the tube that went to the air cleaner with the stock setup.

I currently am still running the stock 190 degree stat but will be changing that this summer to the 180 degree. My muffler was installed for free after I bought the truck. When I bought it it had a nice loud sound to it ( one reason my I bought it ) but noticed a couple days later once i looked under it ( I forgot to check the exhaust at dealership) that the muffler had a hole in it and the outlet pipes were rusted off. I called them up and talked to the salesmen as well as the general manager and they told me they would replace it for free....so they threw on a flowmaster for me for my troubles. And this was from a Ford dealership....go figure. Nice people.
Mines single in dual out type of system. Other posters have a much nicer exhaust setup and you can see what they recommend for what you are looking for. If you want load, headers will help in that category as well, as well as increase exhaust flow delivering slightly more hp.
