1) You should be getting 13.5V output as a minimum from the alternator. 14+ is more like it.
2) How do you know you're only "getting" 1 amp?

Slightly off subject, but when my truck is running I am getting the right votage from the alt. (13.5-14.2 normally depending on speed) I know this because I have a radar detector with a digital voltmeter, and when the engine is off I get around 12.4v as I should. However, the voltmeter in the instrument cluster reads 12 while running, and indicates about 10v when not, almost like the normal line was incorrectly marked 12 when it should have been marked 14, or the needle is not calibrated correctly. It has been this way since I bought the truck in 2001. (It's a 1995 model) Is anybody else seeing this?

I use this item for my 2001 Ram 1500 :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nippo...04154579QQrdZ1

It took me less than one hour to get it done.
