Waterpump on 1998 ram 1500 5.9L
Well it has only 105,000 miles on it and I cant believe that a waterpump will not last at least 200,000 miles. I am just kidding. I need to replace the waterpump on my truck and was wondering how difficult it is. I do all of my own mechanical work so I know I can do it. I was just wondering how hard it is to do it on this truck? Also any tips or tricks I should know about? I plan on changing all of the belts and hoses too while I am at it. As I said before it has 105,000 on it so I know it needs them changed.
I just finished replacing the water pump on my uncles ram. It had 144k miles on it. It took me 2 days to finish the job. My advice is just be patient and while you already have the front of the motor taken apart,
its a good time to replace the thermostat. The hardest part for me was taking out the fan shroud.
Good luck.

since i knew i had a plenum leak, and needed a tuneup, and i had oil leaks from valve covers, oil pan, front seal, rear seal, and also i was real close to the timing chain, and i figured i would just do everything in one big swoop. +1 on the post above, getting the fan and shroud off was the hardest part. i couldn't get the fan off the water pump pulley, and finally just unbolted the water pump with the fan still attached. see all my notes in the post above, as well as links to other tech postings. you do have to take a lot of stuff off, but if you take your time, label everything, keeps bolts seperated in little ziplocks and labeled, and be patient, you'll be fine. go ahead and do thermostat, bypass hose, and depending on your year, consider radiator hoses and heater hoses. once you get all the stuff off, its very easy to change these.
