What did you end up finding out that was causing the problem?

 

The clip that keeps the connectors together popped off so it wasn't getting a good connection.

 

Just for future reference ... NONE of the 98's and SOME of the 99's (later builds) can get a OBD II error code using the ignition key sequence. I had to buy a code reader (back before parts dealers would do it for free) to pull mine.
