Default 5spd Rear End noises

I have a manual transmission in my 98 Ram 5.2L 4x4, when I release the clutch and start driving I get a one time Ticking noise. It also will do it if I am driving slowly in 1st or 2nd gear with the clutch out, and quickly get off the gas pedal.

I have recently replaced the ujoints in my rear driveshaft, so this is not the problem.

I have been searching the forum looking for anything similar and haven't had any luck. The noise seems to happen more often the longer I drive the vehicle and the warmer it is outside. I appreciate any opinions you have. Thanks, Jason

Noone has any ideas for me? It doesn't seem like many Rams were made with the manual transmission....

Get the rear wheels off the ground and if it's in drive then be behind it. Stethescope will help.. did you check the rear brakes and hardware? Axle bearings? pinion bearing?

I haven't checked any of the bearings, I thought it would continue to make noises when i am driving at normal speeds. this is only at slow speeds, generally when pulling out or going in reverse.

I will jack up the truck and see if it makes the noise when i pull out that way, for some reason i feel like it will only make the noise when it is under teh stress of having hte weight of the vehicle and trying to go uphill or someting..

I appreciate the advice! Jason

You could spin the rear tires off the ground by hand first before you get into the danger zone of having it running. You might hear it better that way.

Well, i jacked up the rear of the vehicle and spun the tires and didn't hear anything out of the ordinary.

I am totally clueless on this deal, I might end up taking it to the shop to get it diagnosed. Then if i feel i can fix the problem i will jsut pay for the diagnosis.

I read somehere about the transfer case chain making some weird noises, i would appreciate any info on that.

Thanks

If you check your tires, for rocks/Nails, and do not find any, I would suggest a broken Gear tooth on either the pinion gear or the crown gear. Good Luck [sm=smiley21.gif](that's in the rear Differential)
