ok so i'm looking at getting a 7 in skyjacker lift here in about a year or so and i'm trying to get a jump on all the mods and pricing for the stuff i want.
here's the question.
with the 7 inch lift how big a tire do you think i could fit in there and still have some articulation for going up the trails (it is turning into a trail truck with some mud running) also what gears should i run with the dana 44 front and the corporate 9.25 rear? of course all of this being pushed by the 5.9 gas hog with some mods. they're on the list too.
i was thinking a 37-38 inch tire with some 4.56's andlockers. looking at either the micky's mud terrain, or procomp xterrain.

All the bigger I would go would be 38's because if you go bigger than that you will start breaking axle parts if your wheelin. You will probably breaks parts with 38's with you have a lead foot. The 4.56 gear Ratio is a good match with 38's, if you go lower than that you begin to lose pinion gear strength because the lower you go the smaller it gets making it more prone to breaking

yeah i'm thinking i might just run a 5 inch lift (half the price) and put a 3 inch body. but i really don't like body lifts and they aren't nearly as useful for trails and sand. no added articulation or absorbition of harder landings (not that i jump it but just in case).
i really like the look of my txr's but they really dig in too much on sand and then not enough on mud (too narrow in both cases) but man they are great on snow. i was just killin the foot of powder i was driving through where as the guy in a ford f150 i was with couldn't go anywhere without chains and the other ford ranger with 33 super swamper truxus's was getting stuck on nothin. guess it pays to have a three ton truck (ok 5500 lbs...)with narrow tires that bite.

If you are going to do some REAL offroading, DO NOT put anything bigger than 35's on stock axle's.
I've hear and seen The stock drivetrain fail with 36's-38's. Its not just the diff's, It's the Transfer case too.
My advice to you would be Skyjacker 5" suspension with 35's. This setup is very capable. And if you really wanna have fun put lockers in the diffs.
Bigger tires require, bigger , Full-floating axles, stronger T-Case/Transmission etc...etc... Lots of $$$$$$$. Trust me I've owned mine For 13 years, and my Mods have taken me anywhere( well almost)

yeah i think i'm just going to go with a 5 inch lift and some 35X12.50's on a 16x10 rim be plenty capable for what i do. i'm really more worried about the width now, it's not a light truck after all. the next question becomes should i stick with 4.5" of backspace or go to a less back space of rim?

I'm running 35s with a 3" SkyJacker system. Ox in front and Auburn in rear. Works great. Everyone says if you have a 1500 to not go bigger than 35s if you wheel it. If you do, swap the front axle out to the one from a 2500. Personally, I'd love to go to a 37 but the added expense over a 35 is a lot for the minor gain and greater potential to break. I haven't found too many places here that that has been the issue. For me it has been the width. I've just got too much girth to fit on all the trail.

I have the skyjacker 7" lift and a 3" body with 35's on a 15x10 rim with 3.5" backspace....they stick out A LOT!!!! Fender flares will not cover them. I would go with a 4.5 backspace rim if I were you. I got 17x9 cepek dc-1's coming with 4.5 backspace...when they finally come off of backorder[:@]
