Default pulling a camper

im thinking about getting a 32' camper with a fifth wheel hitch my question is has anyone pulled a camper that large with a 1500 4x4 also the camper im lookin at is a 78-79 model so it would be a little hefty. another ? is my truck has the 7 pin connector for trailer brakes but it doesnt have the box mounted under the dash (that i can see) is the trailer braking system operated by the puter?

Well I dont know about the brake question so maybe someone else can chim. I do know that an older 32 ft. camper is probably going to be too heavy for a 1500. The tow rate for mine which is a 2001 1500 ex. cab 4x4 with the 5.9 is around 6,700 lbs I believe. I can also tell you that my mom just bought a 2008 31ft. 5th wheel and it weighs around 9,000lbs. I dont think the suspension can handle that much weight.

your buddy could have towed it doesnt mean he should have these trucks are rated for a certain weight because that is what they can tow safely do you have any idea how much this camper ways...... you could take care of the tongue weight using airbags or add a leafs the problem is if it ways 20000 pounds your gonna fry something towing it if its like 9000 pounds you could probaly make a few minor changes including gears to make it a little better for towing.

Your 7 pin connector is set up for lights only. You will need to buy a brake controller to mount under the dash in order to operate the trailer brakes. It MAY function through the current harness, but you do not yet have the brake controller.

As for the trailer. You really need to see how much it weighs. I don't think it will be a good idea, I'm betting it's too heavy. You will probably burn up the tranny at least if pulling too much weight for long. It may be a "good deal" on the camper, but if you have to spend on a lot of mods. to barely be able to safely pull it, is it still a "good deal"?
