drive shaft bearings
New to the forum and was hoping someone could helpme. I need to know how to get the front drive shaft bearing off a 98 dodge 1500. Im talking about where the drive shaft goes into the rear diff. Is is pressed on or should it come right off. any help would be great
The rear diff should be 9 1/4 and there are C-clips that hold the axle into the rear diff carrier, you need to remove the inspection cover and large pin to get the clips out. On the front if you don't want to remove the rotors there three 9/16 or 5/8 bolt heads that bolts into the bearing and just slide out. beaware the backing plates come off too.
Theres a front and rear bearing in the "pumpkin", right were the drive shaft comes in. I took the drive shaft off then theres a big 1 1/4 inch nut then the seal then the front bearing i need to replace that one. nothing to do with the axle.
You mean the pinion shaft? I would think the diff carrier has to come out then the pinion shaft will follow. I don't think you can remove it thru the front. You may be able to remove the forward bearing after you pull the pinion seal. I think the rear bearing and shaftwill follow the carrier out.
I think....lol. It's been a while since I have been down there.
Then you might need a case spreader. Also lash and preload have to be set when everything is reinstalled.
Good luck with your ride.
