1996 CEL Codes

1996 CEL Codes
Let me start by saying I'm no mechanic. I understand the basics but I am just looking for advice based on the CEL codes I'm getting on my 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 2WD Indy Ram.
The truck had sat without having been started for 2-3 weeks. I started it up last night, noticed it idling rough, made it maybe 1/4 mile from my house when the CEL came on. I immediately went back home, checked all my fluids, and noticed a little smoke coming from the transmission access. After reading about the codes on this site I checked for CEL codes and received 12 43 37. Seeing that 37 meant that the trans temp sensor was either too hot or too cold and the smoke I had noticed I assume that this code was because the trans temp was too hot.
Just wondering if am Ifacing a complete transmission replacement, rebuild, or possibly a different repair?
