Exhaust questions
Hey guys. I'm getting ready to put a dual cat back system on my truck and I had a couple questions I'd like your input on.
1) Should I go with a 2.25" or 2.5" pipe out the back?
2) How long of a muffler do you think is good? I don't want it too be so loud I can't hear my stereo...a nice growl at idle is really all I'm looking for.
I should mention that I my truck is a 4x4 5.9 with an auto and I use it for towing and some light mudding.
Thanks in advance guys.

Well I do not know if I can give you definate answers, but another member on this forum told me to put 2.25" pipes out the back as to not lose your low end torque from an off the line takeoff. The problem I ran across is finding pre-bent 2.25 mandrel bent tubing for dual exhaust. Maybe I am just not looking in the right place. As far as the lenght of the muffler, I do not know what you would need to know lenght wise. If your looking for a little growl, my friends 2001 5.9 had a cat back exhaust kit from flowmaster (single side exit) which is more or less a stock replacement. It is a tad louder at idle, and has the flowmaster sound. I am sure duals will be a little louder, but at cruise speed it is not a problem, WOT definately sounds pretty decent. He has a flowmaster 50. Personally i think it sounds like a stock replacement as far as loud. Some others have 40's on here which sound great, but you said yourself you do not want it too loud.
i had the cherry bomb system on my 97 fullsize with a 5.2 and it was nice. definitly an improvement over all the shifting points. now they came out with a new series might want to check them out. also you may want to just buy the mufflers and let a shop bend and hang the pipe. it will be cheaper and most places if you pay in cash wont charge sales tax. i went with a 3 inch single catback on my 05 4.7 and the low end grunt was fantastic. seeing you have the 5.9 go with si 2.25 and do 2.5 with the 2.25 single in you wont lose pressure and your lowend grunt will still be there
My truck's a '97 1500 and we just put a new Jeg's dual system on it. My husband got the pipes for me for Mother's Day. They're 2.5 inch pipes with 3.5 inch across stainless tips with glass packs in them. The tips are round slant and measure about 22 inches at the longest point. They point straight out the back on either side of where the spare tire goes, just like my Corvette, exept the Vette has Corsa tips and no glass packs. The exhaust noise is just deep enough without being obnoxious, no louder than the car's. Both beasts have a resonance around 2000rpm, not a pleasant thing, but not harmful.
