2500 rear end noise / shutter
1st post, new member and just got my 1st Ram. Picked up a '96 2500 2wd Club Cab with 27,000 miles from origional owner. Last thing on my mind was to put my '79 Chevy on the market I've had since new. Oh well here's real my prob - Just got the truck a week ago and all was well. Went up to the mountains this past weekend, bout 50 miles, and the rear end makes a shutter sound that I can also feel. First I thought it was the tranny, but it only happened when I was turning, in forward or reverse. Ya, it does have the limited slip. This does not happen going around town on short trips - only when it gets good and warm. Ya think it may just need a lube change plus I've read that it takes an additive that only Dodge sells for the posi. I'm wanting to haul my trailer up camping in 2 weeks - and...well what do you suggest? Also what rear end did Dodge use for this year (It's the HD 2500). Thanks in advance for the help...

what motor/trans do you have? V8 will be a D60, V-10 and Cummins auto will be a D70, std will be a D80 is what you'll have in the rear...not sure what additive they specify, but it'd be a good start, i think they recommend driving in figure-8 patterns after a change to loosen things up if it's chattering. check www.dodgeram.org for some more basic info on these trucks.

The additive is called friction modifier.
Personally, I drained my LSD diff and refilled with Royal Purple 75W140 synthetic. This brand has friction modifier additive already included in it. Some still recommend the Mopar stuff but mine is quiet with the Royal Purple.

You my friend have a 10 dollar problem, go to the dodge dealer buy friction modifier and put it in your diff.
When the clutch packs in the LSD arent alowed to slip they chatter cause its locking your rear wheels together, friction modifier lets them slip a little. On the good side, your LSD is working very well. Dont use anything other then whats suggested, if its 80-90 use it dont switch, make sure you buy regular fluid and then add the friction modifier, dont buy that premixed crap, and DONT use the friction modifier in a tube from autozone its crap.
