Rough idle any ideas ?

Default Rough idle any ideas ?

Hey guys i have just bought a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Short Box with a V6 Magnum( 82000 miles ) My problem is a rough idle.I have changed Plugs, Cap and rotor, wires ,O2 sensors, Air filter and treated the fuel with fuel injection cleaner and dry gas.

While all of this did help it run a bit smoother when driving, It still Idles rough ( Sounds like a miss at low idle ). Any Ideas ?

any codes on the computer? loose spark plug wire? cloged injector? I cant think of much else in the basics department. how did the old plugs look?

EGR valve possibly have some carbon in it? If it can't open and close properly you'll get a rough idle and rough running at lower rpms. It seems to be less noticeable at higher rpms.

No check engine light , I was thinking clogged injector also. How do i test them to see what one it would be ? I will also check the EGR Valve, what would i be looking for, It stuck in one place and not able to move ?

Which grade fuel are you running? I have a 2001 5.9 and if I run the 87 octane regular it idles rough but plus or premium and the thing purrs like a kitten.

Also, I'mnot sure if these trucks have inline fuel filters, but if so you might consider replacing it. If that filter has just enough resistance, all sorts of rough idling, and loss of power can occur.

I do not know how to test injectors I left my manual at home any one else have a book handy?

I'm sure you must have seen posts about it in your searching, the IAC valve causes a lot of idle issues when it's dirty....many posts here about cleaning the TB and the IAC.

Well i just had the TB out and cleaned it up and also cleaned the IAC Valve. Same results, ruff Idle and it kind of sounds like a miss. So I think the next step would be to check the injectors, Anyone know how to do this ?

Also i use the Mid grade gas ( 89 )

Start the truck, take either a mechanics stethascope or a short piece of vacuum or fuel line, and put one end up to each injector in the same spot and the other end to your ear. Each injector should click at the same loudness and beat. You can also check them with an inductive pick-up coil, but this will only tell you if the pcm is sending the signal and that the coil inside the injector is intact.

Another thing you can check is your map sensor. You can do this with a scanner at Autozone, Advance, etc.
BTW you don't have an egr valve. He may have meant pcv valve which, if bad may also cause a rough idle.

Just an update on my progress. I now noticed that when i bring the RPMs up between 1100 and 1500 in neutral , i getwhat feels like a vibration. Couldthis be the case and maybe i dont have a miss after all and somthing is causing a vibration ?


By the way it is a manual 5 speed
