Soon to be Ram owner
Sup folks? I'm about to get my hands on a trad-in at my dealership. 98 modelRam has 5.2 with 172 on the clock. It's a one owner and well maintained, but I noticed a water leak coming from the back side of the WP. My question is how long are the water pumps on the trucks lasting on average? Aslo what else should I take notice to before I buy it? I'm quite mechanicly inclined so you can be technical.
Thanks.
Thanks.
i'd guess about every 5-10 years for a water pump. sounds like you'll need one, so buy it cheap.
here's a funny, but true, welcome message to the dodge ram.

I bought a 96 in 2000 with only 34K. I now have 120K miles.[:-]
Usual stuff for that mileage: I've replaced the starter, water pump, both rad hoses, thermostat and thermostat neck, front brake pads, drive belt, and muffler.
I put an Airraid intake on it cause I hate the stock thingy.
I've had transmission work done on it by an idiot (didnt know till it was too late). when the tranny work was done this guy said he had to replace the computer.
And paint is peeling from the hood and cab top.
But I love her. She's a reliable worker.

Personally, I think that's a lot of miles for a 98. I'd find out if there's any paperwork that came with the truck (more specifically if the tranny has been rebuilt).
Yeah they are a little high, but I can get it on the cheap. Just trying to make sure I don't get nickle and dimed to death.
Oh yeah, it's got a small whine coming from the rear end which is common. Hopefully a fluid change will fix this as it looks like there's been seepage around the rubber plug fill. why didn't Chrysler use a bolt here?

That's some cha ching if you can't do it yourself. Still some money. Also, take someone with you and check the front steering and suspension to make sure it's solid. Definitely get it in and out of 4h and 4l to make sure it engages. Make sure there's no crazy wobble on the highway too.
