Check Engine Light- Need Help!
My check engine light came on this morning when I started the vehicle, as it's supposed to, but this time, it didn't turn off. I took the truck to AutoZone, and had the code read. My vehicle speed sensor on the transmission is shot. It is the output snesor, the scanner said. The part is only $30, so it's not that big of a deal. The problem wil be replacing it. Can anyone tell me how it's done, or even where it is located, what it looks like, stuff like that? It something that I just unplug the old one and plug the new one in, or what? Any help would be really appreciated, because today (Saturday) is the only day I will have for a while to get this done.
They've got it stuck in the side of the tranny. Unplug it and R&R the sensor. Why would the speed sensor set a code when you start the truck though? That wouldn't be monitored by the PCM until you actually drove the vehicle, unless I missed something in your post.

on my 96 it's located back at the end of the tranny above the tranny mount.it has 1 bolt in it and an o ring that seals it.don't panic when you pull out a gear that's your spedo gear.
year especially, because if it's a 98/newer, it won't have a gear or a bolt, the sensor will be threaded into the housing and is a magnetic VR sensor that runs off the parking tabs on the OD housing. The computer could monitor the sensor without waiting for an output for continuity electrically, wouldn't necessarily have to move for the code to come up.
