Default 97 3500 rear end

Looking at buying a 97 3500 with the cummins and a freshly rebuilt auto. My only real concern is the 4.10 posi rear end gears it has. I'm looking at a fair bit of highway driving without a lot of load (at least for this truck) so i'm looking into the possibility of changing to a 3.55. It will need to tow a fairly heavy load around town on a regular basis but as the previous owner was nice enough to upgrade the injectors, fuel plate and exhaust i'm sure power won't be a problem, but not having changed the gears in the dana 80 before i though i might ask someone with a clue. While i'm at it is the "Killer Dowel Pin" a problem with the 97's or was that just a 1st gen thing. Also what would you reccomend as an intake to complement the new 4" exhaust?
Thanks for any and all info.
Scott

a lot of these questions would get better responses under the ctd part of the forum... however were the tires a different size as well?? normally when you get bigger tires you change the gears... and with a ctd power is always there!
