what do you guys haul?
I haul a4000 lb horse trailer. Loaded with two 1000 lb horses and roughly 500 lbs pounds of tack and supplies. About 6000 lbs roughly. No noticeble power loss but keep the OD off driving in the mountains.
i tow alot of chevy trucks, and i think i only towed 1 ford, i never use o/d while im doing it and i got a built tranny with a large tranny cooler, my truck doesn't struggle, but i deff notice im pullin a truck lol
I'm gonna play devils advocate here...only because I have the almost the exact truck you do...no 4:10 gears, no diesel, no major mods. BTW, you didn't mention your tire size, but if its in the 235/245 range you're ok. I run a 285 dia tire.
Today I pulled a U-haul 6x12 trailer about 60 miles empty and Friday will pull it loaded all the way to Tulsa. I have to go from 1000 ft to 8000 ft in about 117 miles.
Empty, I could tell the trailer was there. It was no speed demon by any means. I tried running with or with out overdrive, and with the tire/gear ratio I had, I was either above or below the torque curve of the motor. At 60 mph, I struggled to keep a steady speed in OD, and was running the motor about 3 grand with the OD off. That's a bit high for 117K imo.
I believe you'll find 6000 lbs + luggage + people a bit taxing for your combination. Now, that doesn't mean you can't do it...even my owners manual says I'm good for 7200 lbs...but based on my real world experience, it's on the ragged edge.
I also towed a Mustang on one of those crappy U-haul trailers with the same truck about two years ago. I remember struggling to keep up with Phoenix traffic in 100 degree plus heat, had to run the entire trip with OD off, which sucked gas like a mother. If I'd had a tranny temp guage that day, I 'd have probably freaked!

I haul this trailer with these toys. About 4500 lbs worth. Truck does really well but does take some time to get up to speed. I keep it around 65 on the hwy with the OD turned off. Just towed this back from the ranch before I took the picture. Jeff.

well seeing as how my truck tows everyday of its life, ill chime in, im a landscaper and i tow a 16 ft heavy duty trailer loaded with two commercial z-mowers, that weight about 1,200-1,500 pounds each, along with all my gear, and my truick pulls it fine on the flats, and slight hills, but i live in a very hilly area, and when i hit the big hills its a dog, also note i have a 1998 2500 5.9 litre with a 5-speed, im not talking hills on highways, i mean like country hills in the middle of no where.
i also tow my big tractor around and it is the same outcome. great on flats, and normal driving but when you hit the big hills be prepaired to lose some serious speed.

Ur in the wrong forum, bye bye...
lol i know typo, couldn't resist
tow a 23ft open boat with 200 yamaha about 20 miles every other weekend or so, no problems with 38" tires, 4.56 R&P-close to stock
no where comparable with a 6000lb trailer tho.

I pull a 20' bass boat with a 200 HP Johnson on the back. I have a 01 1500 4x4 Offroad with a 460 and 4.10 gears. I don't take it out of OD and it never loses speed uphill.
